Dictionary Application Database Sample

The last few days I was working on my multi-language dictionary application using the Java programming language. And for building that application I need some words listed in lexicographic order that can be used as a sample database for the project.

After searching around from several websites and forums, I found two great websites that may help you not to sweat-a-lot to make a list of words for a dictionary application that I just created.

1. SIL International (http://www.sil.org/linguistics/wordlists/english/)
A list of 109.582 Home words compiled and corrected in 1991 from lists obtained from the Interociter bulletin board. The original file read.me said that the list Came from Public Brand Software.
This word list includes inflected forms, Such as plural nouns and the-s,-ed and-ing forms of verbs. Thus the number of lexical stems represented in the list is considerably Smaller Than the total number of words.

Available in DOS Text Format (.txt) & zipped

2. Universal Dictionary (http://www.dicts.info/uddl.php) *recommended
From this page you can download hundreds of different bilingual dictionaries for any combination of world languages. (Both languages have to be in the selected dictionary database). There are Few Freely available dictionaries on the Internet – our goal is to allow you to get virtually any bilingual dictionary That May you need free of charge.
There are four different dictionary databases available:

* Universal dictionary (maintained by the Dicts.info project)
* Wiktionary (maintained by the Wiktionary.org project)
* Omegawiki (maintained by the Omegawiki.org project)
* Wikipedia (maintained by the Wikipedia.org project)

Available in Text and XML formats.

Most of the wordlist is in Text format, but if you want to convert it to another form of database (MySQL, MS Access, etc) you may have to take one or two step more on spreadsheet application, or any other application that comfort you the most. I’m using MS Excel to convert it to MySQL using LOAD DATA LOCAL (.csv) on SQL command.

Hope it helps…
